Restoration Story

Zubin Gillespie and Kim Fedor travelled many parts of the world extensively from 1991 – 2011. Over that twenty-year period both were profoundly influenced by what they experienced: culture, history, architecture, religious thought and philosophy.

Overlapping their travels, they opened up two stores in Calgary and Canmore called Buhran Gallery that offered furniture, architecture and Central Asian tribal carpets and textiles. In 2009, combining their knowledge in international world design they purchased their first historic building in downtown Belleville, Ontario. Buhran Developments was started. Their intent was to completely restore the building and incorporate their personal collection. They’ve done it and now live the lifestyle downtown in a historic loft space.

In 2018 they had the opportunity to purchase 212-214 Front Street, the building Zubin had his eye on since first arriving in Belleville. Originally it was a saddlery constructed in 1861. It housed a hair salon, residences, a law office and convenience store. Finally, it was owned by the O’Connor family and home to O’Connors Jewellers since 1950s. Over the last four-years the entire structure has been gutted and restored by Zubin and a small team of craftsman. This included repointing 16,000 bricks and re-creating original window trim. Over twenty radiators were collected from the area, sandblasted and restored to offer the even heating. The back gate is handcrafted metal work.
